In Benin, Voodoo—more accurately called Vodun—is not something mysterious or sinister. It is a respected, traditional religion and an important part of national identity. In fact, Vodun is officially recognized by the government, and every year on January 10th, Benin celebrates Vodun Day, honoring this spiritual heritage.
Unlike the dramatic portrayals often seen in Western media, Vodun in Benin is centered on balance, morality, healing, and community. Practitioners believe in a supreme creator (often called Mawu or Mahu) and serve various spirits connected to nature, ancestors, protection, justice, and daily life. These spirits are not “demons,” but forces that guide and protect families and communities.
Ceremonies may include drumming, dancing, chanting, prayer, offerings, and symbolic art drawn on the ground. Shrines are places of respect and reflection. Priests and priestesses serve as spiritual leaders, healers, and counselors. Many people seek guidance for health, family issues, gratitude, or protection—not to harm others.
About Voodoo & Spirituality
In a world increasingly interested in spirituality, many alternative theories and practices are emerging. Unfortunately, some of these are misguided or poorly represented, neglecting the depth of practice, discipline, and understanding required to truly assist people.
Voodoo — and in particular the priests and guides within our program — is rooted in deep lineage, lived experience, and generational knowledge. Our practitioners come from long-standing spiritual traditions and have cultivated their relationship with the divine over generations.
Unlike many contemporary approaches that focus solely on self-directed techniques, the work here is carried out on your behalf. This process supports and strengthens your own spiritual alignment, helping you reconnect with yourself and understand your place within the greater cosmos.
This work is grounded, ceremonial, and transformative. It seeks to remove illusion and confusion, reconnect you with the ancient aspects of yourself, and address ancestral patterns or conflicts that may be hindering your life. Through this process, you are supported in stepping into clarity and growth, allowing you to move forward in a renewed direction.
What It Is Not
-It is not spiritual bypassing, denial, or detachment from reality.
-It is not stage magic or superstition.
-It is not casual or superficial practice.
